Monimpex Tokaji Aszú Eszencia 1957
5 Stars in  Michael Broadbent`s "Vintage Wine"

Michael Broadbent "Vintage Wines"
"Outstanding vintage and the best since 1947 ... Several notes, first in 1973. In 1989: warm amber with
gold highlights; very rich, baked apples, raisins and honey; TBA-like sweetness and intensity yet not
heavy. Soft, fat, glorious flavour. Two notes in 1994, both noted a pale lime rim, great depth, a whiff of
caramel, high acidity. Last tasted at the Musée Baccarat in Paris, May 2000. ***** "

Alcohol content: 13,34 %
Residual sugar content: 183,7 g/l
Sugarfree extracts: 61,6 g/l
Acidity: 7,3 g/l
Tasting notes at Cellartracker:
"I brought this bottle to a tasting where it was tasted beside of Ch Climens and Ch Lafaurie-Peyraguey.
The Tokay showed a very good balance, intense flavors of nuts and a delicate sweetness. For me it was
more elegant than the Sauternes wines in this flight. The last 15% of the bottle was kept and tasted 4 days
later. It showed excellent condition. Even if the wine was very good now, it will last for several decades
more. 94 points."

"Borkombinat was the large state owned cooperative during the communist era which I believe later
changed their name to Kereskedöház and has now been reorganized into Crown Estates. Matched with
dessert of white and dark chocolate mousse with a raspberry sauce. This was a dark burnt orange/brown
color. On the nose it had a hint of balsamic. Wonderful fruit still present in this wine. Notes of blackberry,
orange peel and plum brandy. Almost portlike in character. This wine was primarily characterized by very
lively acidity which held everything together. Full bodied. A great experience.

"Several notes. Glowing amber-gold; spicy, Beerenauslese-like; very sweet, intense yet with finesse and flavor
of muscatelle and peach. Last noted in Sept 1990 *****  "
The Muskotályos Aszú is a speciality in Tokaj-Hegyalja, it is made from Muscat Lunel grapes only. This wine is
a rarity, because the Muscat Lunel is a very weather-sensitive grape and harder to grow than the Furmint.
Otherwise, Muscat Lunel is very susceptible to Botrytis cinerea. Classical Aszú contains normally not more
than 5% of Muscat Lunel and adds an aromatic bouquet to the Aszú especially in its younger years. Only five
percent of the vineyards in Tokaj-Hegyalja are planted with Muscat Lunel vines.
