„1999: 19 Points. Palate: Complex, good acidity, bitter caramel, tobacco tin and sultanas ...
2005: 20 Points. Palate: ... powerful opulent and wonderful wine.“
Sigi Hiss, wine writer,

„I brought this bottle to a tasting where it was tasted beside of Ch Climens and Ch Lafaurie-Peyraguey. The Tokay showed a very good balance, intense flavors of nuts and a delicate sweetness. For me it was more elegant than the Sauternes wines in this flight. The last 15% of the bottle was kept and tasted 4 days later. It showed excellent condition. Even if the wine was very good now, it will last for several decades more. 94 points.“

„Borkombinat was the large state owned cooperative during the communist era which I believe later changed their name to Kereskedöház and has now been reorganized into Crown Estates. Matched with dessert of white and dark chocolate mousse with a raspberry sauce. This was a dark burnt orange/brown color. On the nose it had a hint of balsamic. Wonderful fruit still present in this wine. Notes of blackberry, orange peel and plum brandy. Almost portlike in character. This wine was primarily characterized by very lively acidity which held everything together. Full bodied. A great experience.“

Szarvas near Tarcal is one of the two Great 1st growths in the Tokaj winegrowing region and has been the most important property of the Rákoczis, until it was confiscated in 1714 on behalf of the Hapsburg Emperor Joseph I. During the 1800s, Szarvas became identified with the expression „Imperial Tokay“. Between the World Wars Szarvas was cultivated under the direction of The Royal Family Vineyard Administration. After 1950, Szarvas was directly under the supervision of the Viti-Vinicultural Research Institute in Tarcal, for which reason it became prime source for the Aszú Eszencia wines of the communist era. This vineyard was not for sale during the privatization process after the 1989 change, and remained property of Crown Estates of Hungary, which was formerly the State Winery.

Just Said ...

„Another glass, Watson!” said Mr. Sherlock Holmes as he extended the bottle of Imperial Tokay. ... „It is a good wine, Holmes.” - „A remarkable wine, Watson. Our friend upon the sofa has assured me that it is from Franz Josef’s special cellar at the Schoenbrunn Palace.”
